Liberal Voice for Women vs. transgender people

Liberal Voice for Women is a British anti-trans group created by members of the Liberal Democrat party.

Background

Liberal Voice for Women was created in 2020 in response to Liberal Democrat Women adopting constitutional wording stating that “trans women are women.”

At the Liberal Democrat spring conference in March 2022, delegates approved an amendment supported by Liberal Voice for Women that explicitly restored the protected characteristic of “sex” to a party diversity policy. Throughout 2022 and 2023, Liberal Voice for Women increasingly focused on what it described as discrimination against members holding gender-critical beliefs.

The dispute escalated in December 2023, when solicitors acting for Liberal Voice for Women sent a formal pre-action letter alleging unlawful discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. In 2024, legal proceedings were initiated after negotiations failed to resolve the dispute. In early 2025, the Liberal Democrats reached an out-of-court settlement with Liberal Voice for Women.
