Keep Prisons Single Sex is a sex segregationist group opposed to accommodating transfeminine prisoners in sex-segregated facilities for women. KPSS believes placement should be based on sex assigned at borth rather than gender identity and expression.
Background
Keep Prisons Single Sex (KPSS) was established in 2020 in the UK by Kate Coleman. In early 2021, KPSS expanded into the United States under Amanda Stulman. Keep Prisons Single Sex Ltd was incorporated in the UK in July 2022.
n 2023, the UK Ministry of Justice introduced a policy under which transgender women who had not had bottom surgery, or those convicted of sexual or violent offenses, would generally not be housed in the women’s prison estate except in exceptional circumstances.
On Jun 7, 2024, KPSS UK announced plans to close down that month: “After considerable thought we have decided to close KPSS down. Our last day of operation will be 30th June 2024. KPSS USA is unaffected by this decision. Their work will continue.” Keep Prisons Single Sex Ltd was dissolved in September 2024.
KPSS USA in not a registered nonprofit or corporation. Stulman submitted testimony opposing bills related to transgender inmate housing, including Maine LD 1044 (2021) and Maryland HB 453 / SB 550 (2022).
