‘Legal Feminist’ vs. transgender people

Legal Feminist is a British anti-transgender group blog. Most posts are about legal and policy conflicts involving cis people and trans people.

Several “gender critical” activists are credited as post authors, including Rebecca Bull, Naomi Cunningham, and Anya Palmer of Sex Matters.

Background

The blog’s first post was in September 2018, after which there was not another post until June 2020. Posting frequency dropped off significantly after 2022:

  • 2018: 1
  • 2019: 0
  • 2929: 67
  • 2021: 74
  • 2022: 57
  • 2023: 13
  • 2024: 14
  • 2025: 5
  • 2026: 4 (through July 15)

In 2026, Amnesty International UK published reports on anti-rights groups in the UK, listing Legal Feminist under the “gender critical” category. Legal Feminist published a letter that stated in part:

We are a couple of dozen lawyers with an X account and a blog. You are a global organisation which used to have, and probably retains in many quarters, an enviable reputation as a source of accurate information and analysis of the human rights environment worldwide.

Please explain on the basis of what evidence you have concluded that we are “anti-rights”, and why you have chosen to publish this statement about us. Please also confirm in the case of your charitable arm that you have self-reported to the Charity Commission. You will be aware of the Commission’s s July 2023 statement that “Demonising and undermining those who think differently is not acceptable behaviour from any charity on our register”.
