Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF) vs. transgender people

Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF) is an American organization dedicated to anti-transgender extremism and sex segregationism. They espouse a trans-exclusionary version of what they call radical feminism.

WoLF is notable for frequently collaborating with anti-feminist groups, including Alliance Defending Freedom, The Heritage Foundation, Family Policy Alliance, and Independent Women’s Forum.

Background

WoLF was founded by Lierre Keith in 2013, incorporated in 2016, and earned non-profit status in 2018.

In 2016, WoLF applied for a grant from religious conservative group Alliance Defending Freedom for a lawsuit challenging a May 13 Obama Administration guidance on Title IX, which directed agencies to interpret “on the basis of sex” to mean on the basis of gender identity.

Starting in 2016, WoLF began organizing an event called WoLF Fest.

WoLF Fest

Staring in 2016, the organization held an annual conference, continued until 2019.

2019 collaboration with Heritage Foundation

In 2019, WoLF collaborated on an event with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative group known for:

  • Opposing abortion rights and supporting Roe‘s reversal
  • Seeking to restrict or reverse FDA approval of mifepristone
  • Enforcing the Comstock Act against mailing abortion pills
  • Removing “reproductive health” language from federal programs
  • Shifting family-planning funding away from Planned Parenthood
  • Opposing the Paycheck Fairness Act
  • Downplaying discrimination as a cause of the gender pay gap
  • Opposing federal paid-leave mandates
  • Opposing the Equal Rights Amendment
  • Objecting to parts of Violence Against Women Act reauthorizations
  • Removing “gender equality” from federal documents
  • Emphasizing traditional married-family structures in policy
  • Opposing same-sex marriage and Obergefell
  • Supporting religious exemptions to decline same-sex weddings
  • Opposing the Equality Act
  • Removing sexual orientation and gender identity terms from federal rules and data

The reason WoLF is willing to overlook all of this is that Heritage Foundation shares Beck’s unremitting contempt for trans and gender diverse people. Their shared goals include:

  • Defining sex as biological in law, including Title IX
  • Opposing gender-transition care for minors
  • Opposing transgender women in women’s sports
  • Opposing transgender military service
  • Describing “transgender ideology” as pornography that should be outlawed (Project 2025 foreword)

The panels included WoLF members Julia Beck, Jennifer Chavez, and Kara Dansky.

2022 Women’s Bill of Rights

In 2022, Women’s Liberation Front and Independent Women’s Voice developed the Women’s Bill of Rights as a way to erase transgender people in law and policy. Supporters want to set legal definitions of woman, man, male, female, and sex. They want to use the “gametic definition” of sex, which says that sex is based on the type of gamete (egg or sperm) a person’s body is built to produce.

This model legislation has since been introduced at both state and federal levels, with versions enacted in several US states.
