Nancy Stade vs. transgender people

Nancy Stade is an American lawyer and anti-transgender activist. In 2023, Stade prepared a petition submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking to ban off-label use of puberty-blocking drugs, which would affect trans and gender diverse minors.

Background

Nancy K. Stade was born in March 1965 to Dorothy Louise “Dolly” (Fletcher) Stade (died 2013) and George Stade (né George Gustave Comins, 1933–2019). Stade’s parent George was an author and professor at Columbia University. Nancy Stade has three siblings: Bjorn (Barry), Eric, and Kirsten, and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1983.

Stade attended Columbia University, earning a bachelor’s degree and a law degree.

Stade was an attorney at FDA from 1994 to 2015. Stade then joined Sidley Austin as a partner in 2016. In 2019, Stade founded Stade Consulting Practice. In 2023, Stade was named a partner at Foley Hoag. In 2024, Stade joined Rubrum Advising, a healthcare consultancy.

2023 petition

In November 2023, Stade filed petition FDA-2023-P-3767, seeking to ban off-label use of puberty blocking drugs. This is a key goal of anti-trans activists who want to stop young people from making a gender transition.

Stade’s petition was signed by dozens of anti-trans activists and organizations. For the full list, see Nancy Stade: 2023 FDA petition.
