The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network vs. transgender people

The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network (CBC) is an American nonprofit that frequently engages in anti-transgender activism. CBC views gender-affirming care as part of a “medical scandal.” 

Background

The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network was established in 2000 by Jennifer Lahl. CBC’s work centers on two broad domains described as the “making of human life” and the “faking of human life.”

Their “making of human life” advocacy focuses on reproduction and is critical of many forms of assisted human reproduction. They have expressed positions on sperm donation, egg donation, surrogacy, stem-cell research, fetal genetic testing, artificial wombs or synthetic gametes (eggs, sperm), embryo adoption, egg freezing, and related assisted reproductive technologies.

Their “faking of human life” advocacy focuses on human enhancement, germline modification or genetic engineering (including technologies like CRISPR), human cloning, “therapy vs. enhancement” debates, transhumanism, and ethical questions around synthetic biology or attempts to manufacture human life.

CBC has been a prominent voice in anti-trans activism. CBC opposes early medical transition and affirming models of care, promotes stories of “detransition,” and raises ethical questions around consent, long-term effects of trans healthcare, and the medicalization of gender identity.
