Martin Lalumière is a Canadian psychologist and anti-transgender activist. Lalumière was affiliated with the anti-trans Clarke Institute in Toronto (now CAMH). Lalumière has published work with other anti-trans activists, including J. Michael Bailey, Ray Blanchard, James Cantor, Meredith Chivers, Michael Seto, Paul Vasey, and Kenneth Zucker.
Lalumière was an organizer of the anti-trans Puzzles of Sexual Orientation conference with Paul Vasey while teaching at University of Lethbridge.
Background
Martin L. Lalumière was born in Ville-d’Anjou (now part of Montréal) and grew up in St-Alphonse-Rodriguez, near Joliette.
Lalumière attended Université de Montréal, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1989 and a master’s degree in 1990. Lalumière earned a doctorate from Queen’s University in 1995. Lalumière was a research psychologist at the Mental Health Centre in Penetanguishene (now Waypoint) from 1996 to 1997 and at the Clarke Institute in Toronto (now CAMH) from 1997 to 2004. Both had secure treatment facilities for sex offenders and were known for producing anti-transgender research and policy guidelines. Lalumière taught at the University of Lethbridge from 2004 to 2012, then joined the University of Ottawa in 2013.
Lalumière teaches courses in forensic psychology, “abnormal psychology,” evolutionary psychology, and clinical research. Lalumière’s research focuses on sex differences in sexual arousal patterns, “hypersexuality,” and the origins of atypical sexual preferences.
Lalumière joined the International Academy of Sex Research and served on the editorial board for their anti-trans journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.
