Az Hakeem vs. transgender people

Az Hakeem is a Welsh psychiatrist and anti-transgender extremist. Hakeem is an advisor to anti-trans groups Genspect and Sex Matters, Hakeem is also affiliated with Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender and has presented at conferences held by Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine.

Background

Azeem Maxwell “Az” Hakeem was bornĀ in September 1972 in North Wales and attended Rydal School. Hakeem got a medical degree at UCL, then specialized in psychiatry.

From 2000 to 2012 Hakeem worked at Camden & Islington and at The Portman Clinic. Hakeem later went into private practice.

Hakeem was a founder of the Shaw Mind Foundation in 2017. Hakeem frequently appears in the media to discuss psychiatry.

Anti-transgender activism

Hakeem began writing virulently anti-trans articles in around 2007.

Hakeem’s book TRANS was published by Trigger Press in 2017.

Hakeem signed the 2023 anti-trans Stade petition to the US Food and Drug Administration seeking to ban off-label use of puberty blocking drugs.

In 2024, Hakeem signed a 2024 UK Public Inquiry request demanding a public inquiry into transgender healthcare.

In 2024, Hakeem signed a FAIR in Medicine 2024 letter attacking the American Psychiatric Association for publishing the 2023 bookĀ Gender-Affirming Psychiatric Care.Ā 

In 2024, Hakeem signed WHO Decides, a 2024 petition critical of theĀ World Health Organization and their plan to develop new transgender health guidelines.
