Mara Keisling is an American transgender rights activist. Kiesling founded the National Center for Transgender Equality (now merged with Advocates for Trans Equality).
Background
Mara R. Keisling was born on September 29, 1959 to William and Elaine Keisling in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Keisling has six siblings.
Keisling earned a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1987. Keisling made a gender transition around age 40.
Keisling served as adjuct teaching faculty at George Mason University and Marymount University.
Activism
Keisling started in state-level activism as co-chair at Statewide Pennsylvania Rights Coalition (SPARC).
Keisling founded the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) in 2003. Keisling led efforts that won significant advances in transgender equality, such as the inclusion of gender identity in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the first Congressional hearing on transgender issues, and many federal administrative and state-level wins.
In 2007, KQED featured a debate of Alice Dreger‘s defense of anti-trans psychologist J. Michael Bailey, author of the 2003 book The Man Who Would Be Queen. Dreger, Bailey, Keisling, and Joan Roughgarden were guests.
In 2008, NCTE partnered with the National LGBTQ Task Force to launch the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS). In 2015, NCTE launched the U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS) of over 28,000 transgender American adults. In 2016, Keisling was arrested while protesting an anti-trans “bathroom bill” in North Carolina.
Keisling left NCTE in summer 2021 following several years of controversy regarding Keisling’s alleged management style and conduct. In 2024, a clip of Keisling speaking with Kamala Harris in 2019 was used in an anti-trans attack ad by the Donald Trump presidential campaign. Following the election, Keisling told LGBTQ Nation:
“I think it had devastating impact; not on the election itself, but on trans people.
[…] Do I think it cost Kamala Harris the election? No. Did it solidify Trump’s attacks that she was a quote ‘San Francisco liberal’? Probably some. But the really scary part about it is how much it terrified children and parents of children. I don’t think we’re going to know for years how much $200 million plus in anti-trans ads has hurt trans people. We know it’s hurt us individually, but we don’t know how much it’s set back the movement for our rights.”
Keisling has served on the boards of Common Roads, Stonewall Democracy Fund, and Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE).
In 2024 NCTE and Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF) merged to form Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE).
