Fox Varian is an American actor and ex-transgender activist. In 2026, a jury awarded Varian $2 million in a malpractice suit against the practitioners who were involved in Varian’s top surgery as a minor. It was the first ex-trans case to go to a jury trial.
Background
Fox Varian was born in 2003 to nurse Claire Elaine (Varian) Deacon (born 1966). Fox Varian previously used a number of names, including:
- Isabella R. Basile
- Gabriel Basile
- B. Rowan Basile
Varian made a gender transition as a minor. Varian went to the Albany Pride Center for support, began using “he/him” pronouns, got a short haircut, and changed names from Isabella Basile to Gabriel, then Rowan, then Fox. Varian also sought out medical options that included masculinizing top surgery at age 16. Ten months after surgery, Varian wrote, “It’s such an immense relief to wake up and not feel at odds with my body.”
Trial
Varian later had regret, made additional gender changes, and filed a lawsuit against psychologist Kenneth Einhorn and plastic surgeon Simon Chin. Varian alleged medical malpractice and a failure of informed consent.
The jury trial ended on January 30, 2026 in Varian’s favor, and they awarded a $2 million judgment against Einhorn and Chin. Einhorn was found to be 70% responsible.
