The Washington Examiner is a conservative American media organization that produces consistently anti-transgender content.
Notable anti-trans contributors include Ben Appel, Aida Cerundolo, Libby Emmons, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Coleman Hughes, Bethany Mandel, River Page, Brad Polumbo, and Colin Wright.
Background
In 2004, Clarity Media Group, owned by Philip F. Anschutz, purchased Journal Newspapers Inc., which owned several newspapers in the Washington DC area. The newspapers were consolidated and relaunched as the Washington Examiner, initially as three editions serving Washington, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2005, the website dcexaminer.com launched, and in 2009, washingtonexaminer.com became the primary website.
From 2005 to 2013, the Examiner operated primarily as a free daily tabloid. In June 2009, Clarity Media acquired The Weekly Standard.
In 2013, Clarity Media announced that the daily newspaper would cease publication. The final daily issue appeared on June 14, 2013. Its print product became a weekly political magazine. In 2019, the weekly print magazine was redesigned and expanded to 44 issues annually, with a broader national readership and editorial focus.
