The Lesbian Project vs. transgender people

The Lesbian Project is a British website founded by anti-trans activists Julie Bindel and Kathleen Stock.

Research consistently shows that lesbian young adults are most likely to say they know a trans person (92%), and most likely to say they are “supportive” or “very supportive” of trans people (96%). A vocal minority of lesbians, especially those who came out in the 20th century, are stridently anti-transgender. The Lesbian Project represents this vocal anti-trans minority.

Background

The Lesbian Project was incorporated in November 2022. Their website went live in 2023. They state “We use the word ‘lesbian’ to mean ‘exclusively same-sex attracted female.’”

Anti-trans activism

In March 2023, The Lesbian Project published a report on “Lesbian Erasure in the UK” with a foreword by Julie Bindel. “Lesbian erasure” is an anti-trans buzzword which claims that the concept of gender “erases” lesbians, which is based on the concept of sex. They also held held an event titled “Putting Lesbians Back in Focus.” Scheduled speakers were Jo Phoenix, Sue Regan, Kathleen Richardson, Rosemary Auchmuty, Harriet Wistrich, Julie Bindel, and Kathleen Stock.

In April 2024, The Lesbian Project released a statement praising the anti-trans Cass Review by Hilary Cass on healthcare for transgender youth.

On October 22, 2024 Scottish Lesbians, The Lesbian Project, and LGB Alliance submitted as intervenors in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers. Their submission, prepared by Karon Monaghan and Beth Grossman, concludes:

“This case is centrally concerned with the rights of biological women and lesbians. If the Inner House’s Judgment and reasoning are correct, the category of same-sex orientation would be eliminated. This is something that would be profoundly homophobic and undermine the efforts made over decades by lesbians and gay men for equality as such. It would make lesbians invisible, cloaked behind a legal device that treats males as lesbians with an entitlement to occupy lesbian spaces and appropriate lesbian identity. Authentic lesbianism would again become the love that cannot speak its name.”

After For Women Scotland prevailed, The Lesbian Project released a statement praising the outcome.

In 2025, they released a short video criticizing The 2017 LGBT Survey, which they claim aided in lesbian “erasure.” They also criticized the 2021 UK Census for the same reason.

In March 2025, The Lesbian Project released a Statement praising the anti-trans Sullivan Review by Alice Sullivan. which promoted trans-exclusionary data activism.

Podcast

In November 2023, The Lesbian Project launched as a podcast hosted by Julie Bindel and Kathleen Stock. Their first guest was American anti-trans troll Katie Herzog.
