Tracy Edwards vs. transgender people

 Tracy Edwards is a British sailor and sex segregationist. Edwards is a prominent opponent of transgender athletes competing in sex-segregated competitive sport.

In 2025, Edwards and Sharron Davies co-founded anti-trans organization Women’s Sports Union.

Background

Tracy Karen Edwards was born on September 5, 1962 in Pangbourne, Berkshire, England. Edwards’ seminal parent died in 1972, and Edwards left school at age 16 in 1978 without formal qualifications. Edwards traveled extensively and worked various jobs before discovering sailing in the early 1980s while living in Greece.

Edwards first maritime role was in 1983 on charter yachts, which led to involvement in competitive sailing. In 1987, Edwards joined British skipper King Hussein of Jordan’s yacht Royal Jordanian in the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Edwards reportedly experienced gender discrimination during this time.

In 1988, Edwards began planning a sex-segregated crew to compete in the next Whitbread race. In 1989, Edwards launched and skippered the yacht Maiden, winning two legs of the race and taking second overall. Edwards was the appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1990, at age 27.

In 1998 Edwards founded and skippered a sex-segregated crew that attempted the Jules Verne non-stop round the world record, but they were dismasted Cape Horn. Edwards retired from professional sailing in 2000. That year, Edwards organized a sex-integrated Maiden II crew.

In 2017, Edwards launched the Maiden Factor project to restore the Maiden and promote sex-segregated education worldwide. The restored Maiden began a global world tour in 2018. In 2019, the documentary Maiden premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Edwards has one child, Mackenna Edwards-Mair (born 1999).

Anti-trans activism

In 2025, Edwards was critical of the musical Maiden Voyage. Edwards was in attendance when the actors encouraged the audience to donate to trans-inclusive organization Pride Sports.

In 2025, Edwards and Sharron Davies co-founded sex segregationist organization Women’s Sports Union.
