Roger Hyatt vs. transgender people

Roger Hyatt is an American psychiatrist and anti-transgender activist. Hiatt has testified in support of bills to ban trans healthcare for minors in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Idaho, all of which passed.

Background

Roger Lew Hiatt, Jr. was born to physician Roger Lew Hiatt, Sr. (1929–2018) and Nancy Ann Beamer Hiatt (1931–2018). Hiatt grew up Latter-Day Saint (Mormon) and has two siblings.

Hiatt earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1985 and a medical degree from University of Tennessee in 1992. Hiatt completed a psychiatric residency at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in 1997. Hiatt has been licensed in Utah, Tennesse, and Arkansas.

In 2015, Hiatt was named psychiatrist for Provo Canyon School. Hiatt is medical director and child psychiatrist at the 12th Street location of Centers for Youth & Families (now The Centers) in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Hiatt, Jr. married Cary Monson Hiatt in 1989. They have six children.

Anti-trans activism

According to testimony in support of anti-trans bills, Hiatt has reportedly treated “over 200 minors self-identifying as transgender.”

In 2021, Hiatt sent a letter to Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson claiming a 20% “detransition” rate.

In 2023, Hiatt testified at Idaho’s House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee in support of House Bill 71 (the “Vulnerable Child Protection Act”), which made it a felony to provide trans healthcare for minors.
