Jeffrey Epstein vs. transgender people

Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier and convicted sex offender whose criminal history is tied primarily to the sexual abuse and trafficking of underage girls. The release of the Epstein Files revealed a number of troubling details about Epstein’s views and actions regarding transgender people.

Inclusion on this page is not an indication of criminality or guilt. This profile documents how a network of powerful people privately interacted and spoke about transgender people.

Background

Jeffrey Edward Epstein was born on January 20, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, to Pauline Epstein, a school aide, and Seymour Epstein, who worked for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Epstein attended Lafayette High School and skipped two grades before enrolling at Cooper Union in 1969. Epstein later transferred to New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 1971 but left in 1974 without completing a degree.

In 1974, Epstein began teaching physics and mathematics at the Dalton School, a private preparatory school in Manhattan. Epstein departed the school in 1976 and soon entered the financial sector, joining Bear Stearns as a junior assistant. By 1980, Epstein had become a limited partner. Epstein left the firm in 1981 and founded financial consulting company, J. Epstein & Co., which managed money for wealthy clients. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Epstein began building a wider professional network and acquired multiple properties, including residences in New York, Florida, New Mexico, Paris, and a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Epstein’s legal troubles became public in 2005 when police in Palm Beach, Florida, began investigating allegations that Epstein had sexually abused minors. In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor and procuring a minor for prostitution. Epstein was sentenced to 18 months in jail and served approximately 13 months, followed by probation and registration as a sex offender.

On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested in New Jersey on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in Florida and New York. On August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, Epstein was found dead. The New York City medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide by hanging.

Anti-trans comments

In a 2017 interview with Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff, Epstein said of Donald Trump: “I think he’s doing a pretty good job at certain things and he’s not getting credit for it. All the transgender stuff, the bathroom stuff, giving police back their weapons.”

Ava Cordero allegations and lawsuit

In 2007, Ava Cordero, a Hispanic transgender model, accused Epstein of sexual abuse when Cordero was an adolescent. Epstein reportedly coerced Cordero into unwanted sexual acts at age 16. At the time, Cordero was outed in the New York Post as trans and deadnamed, ridiculed in the media, and deemed not credible. In 2007, Cordero filed a civil lawsuit, Cordero v Epstein et al. against Epstein and owners of building where alleged assaults occurred.

  • October 16, 2007: Plaintiff Ava Cordero filed the original complaint against Jeffrey Epstein in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleging sexual assault that occurred when Cordero was under 17 years old. Cordero soon filed an amended complaint adding additional defendants the owners of building where the alleged abuse occurred. Cordero made additional allegations that included violent sexual assaults in 2000 and 2001. Cordero also alleged “insanity” to toll (extend) the statute of limitations
  • April 2008: Motions hearing on issues including statute of limitations and alleged plaintiff insanity claims.
  • July 16, 2008: Court conducted a hearing on plaintiff’s asserted mental condition and other procedural matters.
  • October 10, 2008: Court decision issued on defendants’ motion to dismiss and plaintiff’s request to amend the complaint. Cordero’s claims were time-barred under the New York Civil Practice Law & Rules (CPLR); the alleged abuse occurred years before the lawsuit was filed, and the Court found that Cordero did not establish legal “insanity” during the relevant period to toll the statute of limitations. The negligence claims against additional defendants were similarly barred by applicable limitation periods.

In 2008, Cordero sued the New York Post for libel (Ava v NYP Holdings, Inc.), asserting claims including libel, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress based on the Post article.

Epstein Files

In 2026, the U.S. Justice Department released extensive email correspondence and documents connected to Epstein’s network under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Some of these touch on transgender-related topics.

Jess Ting

Jess Ting is an American plastic and reconstructive surgeon who later became known for transgender medicine and gender-affirming surgery. Ting maintained contact with Epstein after Epstein’s 2008 conviction, from 2010 to 2018. Ting provided medical consultations and procedures upon request for Epstein’s associates. Epstein provided funding to Ting, including $50,000 for research with Doris Germain and to support Ting’s colleague Emily Harris, who was about to be terminated for lack of funds.

A 2013 email from Epstein’s assistant offered Ting a visit to Epstein’s Little St. James island. Ting reportedly visited in March 2013 with a friend and the friend’s three children.

In 2016, Ting emailed Epstein after being appointed as surgical director of the new transgender surgery program at Mount Sinai. Ting sought support for a documentary centered on that program. The messages describe the program as groundbreaking work in transgender care. However, there is no indication in the available documents that Epstein actually funded the documentary. Epstein previously had given Ting a grant for unrelated research.

In a 2026 statement to The Advocate, Ting responded to an inquiry by Christopher Wiggins:

“I came to know Jeffrey Epstein in my professional capacity as a general plastic surgeon about 10+ years ago,” Ting wrote. He said the initial interaction involved providing wound care and scar healing recommendations to a professional model who had been injured in a car accident and referred to him following treatment at a trauma center. “I remember reading news reports about his being charged with sex crimes, but I don’t recall if that was before or after I treated any of the patients referred by his office,” Ting added.

The documents do not allege wrongdoing by Ting.

Robert Trivers

Robert Trivers is an American sociobiologist. Trivers was a key figure within Epstein’s circle regarding Epstein’s interest in funding “research” about transgender people.

On October 5, 2009 Epstein invited Trivers to Florida.

On October 20, 2015, Epstein told Noam Chomsky about funding Trivers: “i am his major funder. he got thrown out of ru=gers for good this time.”

On February 6, 2016, Trivers thanked Epstein for an advisory position with Epstein’s foundation and for funding recently received. Trivers says it “will go entirely toward the theoretical work you have urged upon me.” Epstein responded, “i want to see you piece on transgender in the bio world.”

On March 29, 2016 request for additional funding, Trivers told Epstein:

i am getting to the end of ‘transsexuality’—need again only to choose venue and adjust style—have had a lot of fun with the attraction of the new morph(s)—have your cake and eat it too—a woman with a dick—i.e. if you as a heterosexual male and have a minor desire to suck a dick then what better organism to do it with than a transsexual? ‘she’ will smell like a woman, be softer and more hairless like a woman and may, to some degree, actually resemble one morphologically—leaving the dick for you to enjoy in a feminine setting.”

Trivers and Epstein stopped corresponding for a time while Trivers was employed at Chapman University. Based on references in a March 31, 2018 email to Chapman President Daniele Struppa and copied to Epstein, Gordon Getty, and Howard Crabtree, Trivers was apparently accused of indecent exposure by Struppa’s assistant.

On December 17, 2018, Trivers sent the following update to Epstein:

it is very simple—i will compare male to female with female to male
with greater molecular control over development we are increasingly capable of producing novel phenotypes—more feminine men, by blocking testosterone receptors (or castration) and, at the same time, increasing estrogen production—the one bocks male features, the second encourages female features more masculine women—heavy testosterone dosage—incredible external effects, heavily bearded men, you would never guess they had a female bone in their body
first kind—male -> female is 4 times more frequent than female -> male
the first is attractive—he is a woman with a cock, so that if your fantasy is to suck a man’s dick, otherwise you are completely heterosexual, it would be much nicer if the rest of the organism is female, then you get the best of both worlds so many transsexual women are very attractive and easily make money which in turn they assert promotes their prostitution since they have to pay hefty fees for injections every week, but they are sexually happy,–once you have reached manhood even castration does not prevent the sensation of organism contrast the poor female to male versions, they are unhappy and lonely—they are men with mum-pums, the worst of both worlds

In an excellent overview on Trivers, Ev Nichols noted, “He is clearly a chaser who wants to use his status as a researcher to naturalize his own sexual appetites.”

On March 16, 2019, Trivers complained to Epstein about Epstein’s recent lack of financial support: “after 7 years of continuous support, you seemed to flip, no support at all for past two years nor response to requests.” On March 16, 2019, Epstein responded to Trivers in part:

“I thought that you might want to focus on transgender biology . people would be interestsesd and i would fund. I am a true beileiver in your talents. my understanding and of course it could be incorrect. was that honor killing work was detrimental for you. as was the knee hip ratio in sprinters etc.. little public interest where the genetics of exceptional and transgender would be helpful.”

In June 2020, Trivers published a paper in the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science with John T. Manning and Bernhard Fink hypothesizing that “Transgendered belief—the conviction that one is the opposite gender to one’s natal gender—may be influenced by prenatal sex steroids.”

Lawrence Krauss

Lawrence Krauss is an American physicist and anti-transgender activist. Krauss edited the anti-trans book The War on Science. Krauss, facing harassment accusations at the time, sought Epstein’s advice.

On October 15, 2010, Krauss emailed a proposed agenda for an event on Epstein’s island, followed by “entertainment of some sort.” Listed speakers were:

In an August 13, 2014 email thread about Maryam Mizarkhani winning the prestigious Fields Medal in mathematics titled “well, at least one woman can do math,” Krauss replied “transgender probably.”

Michael Shermer

Michael Shermer is an American writer and anti-transgender activist. According to an April 20, 2018 email in the Epstein Files, Shermer was among those invited by Deepak Chopra to a propsed dinner that included Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Lawrence Krauss. There are no documented emails, meetings, financial ties, or social visits between Michael Shermer and Jeffrey Epstein in the publicly released Epstein files.

Richard Dawkins

Richard Dawkins is a British biologist and anti-transgender activist.

Dawkins visited Epstein’s island in 2002.

After Epstein was convicted, Dawkins was also scheduled to attend a meeting in November 2010, according to an invitation Epstein sent to Bamaby Mars. Epstein listed these planned attendees:

On October 15, 2010, Krauss emailed Epstein to say that Steven Pinker and Dawkins would not be able to attend due to scheduling conflicts. Krauss mentioned in the thread that Savas Dimopoulos or Lisa Randall should be invited.

Dawkins contacted an Epstein associate to complain about Rebecca Watson, who was criticizing Lawrence Krauss for associating with Epstein.

Sam Harris

Sam Harris is an American writer, podcaster, and anti-transgender activist. Harris met Epstein with John Brockman at the 2014 TED conference. In 2015 Harris was invited to a dinner by Epstein: “I thought you might enjoy a dinner with woody alien, chomsky and me, it should be fun.” Harris replied, “Only if we film it
 :).” When Epstein asked “are you ever in ny?,” Harris responded “No plans at the moment.” The following day, Epstein wrote to Harris again, but Harris apparently did not respond.

Nellie Bowles

Nellie Bowles is an American author and anti-transgender activist. Bowles is married to anti-trans activist Bari Weiss.

In 2018, while working as a reporter at The New York Times, Bowles was invited to meet with Jeffrey Epstein at Epstein’s New York City residence. The meeting was facilitated by Masha Drokova, identified as a contact associated with Epstein’s circle. On August 27, 2018, Drokova wrote to Epstein:

I have a new friend who’s fun and smart. She’s New=York Times reporter – https://www.nytimes.com/by/nellie-bowles She’s visiting NYC from SF. Let me know if you’d like to meet her. No agenda. Just for =un. I like her a lot.

Bowles an Epstein exchanged a couple of emails after the meeting. Bowles did not publish reporting about the meeting at the time.

The following year, Bowles contributed to a Times piece about Epstein’s New York residence after Epstein’s arrest and authored another on accepting “tainted funds” following Epstein’s death.

In February 2026, Bowles published a piece in The Free Press describing their interactions. Bowles expressed regret about not cultivating the relationship.

J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is a British author and anti-transgender extremist.

Online commenters speculated that a March 25, 2013 exchange between Epstein and “Jx” may be Rowling, but the evidence is not strong (agin is how the word again sounds in some dialects including Scots, and Rowling has signed messages with Jx).

  • Epstein: “april 4th . ehud barak peter mandelson. etc . you are agin invited. ( the pronuncaiton of agin appropriate )”
  • Jx: “I don’t know what you’re trying to say, wordsmith. I can’t go around flying places for dinner parties. Although I’d love to. I may be in NY the week of the 8th, but not sure yet
.”
  • Epstein: “ill explain, the again when we meet. , I of course would pay your ticket,if that is the issue rather than lack of available time.”
  • Jx: “Of course you would! I know that. (And thank you) But if I don’t see the inside of another airplane or NY until summer I will be a happy woman. I’ll let you know when I’m next there.”

In 2018, Rowling’s team provided two tickets for Epstein to the Broadway performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, including a Hogwarts-themed dinner and after party held on April 22, 2018. On April 19, Epstein’s longtime executive assistant Lesley Groff asked, “OK for JE to bring 2 guests to the Harry Potter dinner?”

In response to the revelations, Rowling stated on X: “This is beyond silly. Neither I, nor anybody on my team, ever met, communicated with or invited Jeffrey Epstein to anything.”

Shortly after the files were released, on February 2, 2026, X user hemita reported that the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for Rowling’s superyacht Samsara was removed from marinetraffic and other online vessel tracking services, though it returned on some sites later. hemita noted “there’s no log for Little St James island” but did not check nearby ports.

Jerry Coyne

Jerry Coyne is an American biologist and anti-transgender activist. In 2019, Coyne made a post and a follow-up defending Steven Pinker following criticism of Pinker’s association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Okay, well if Pinker is reprehensible for doing a small job for Alan Dershowitz, who was working on Epstein’s defense, then I must be far worse. For, as I’ve mentioned on this site several times, I was on O.J. Simpson’s defense team in his famous trial for killing Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. Yep, it’s all true: I was recruited to look at the prosecutors’ DNA evidence against Simpson—specifically, the calculated probabilities of a random person matching the DNA evidence taken from blood. (That’s a population-genetic matter that I can speak to.)

I didn’t do much for the defense team, I didn’t testify, and I refused a fee (I didn’t take money for any of my expert-witness help on DNA statistics). But I did do something—surely more than Pinker did for Dershowitz.

Steven Pinker

Steven Pinker is an American academic and anti-transgender activist. While Pinker reportedly received no funding from Epstein and did not correspond with Epstein, they had interacted on numerous occasions.

In 2002, Pinker flew on Jeffrey Epstein’s private plane (dubbed the “Lolita Express”) to a TED conference in California. Pinker’s literary agent reportedly invited Pinker to join other TED speakers on Epstein’s flight.

Pinker and Epstein appeared at some of the same intellectual gatherings tied to figures like John Brockman and the Edge Foundation in the early 2000s. Pinker and Epstein were at the same 2004 event at Harvard’s Program for Evolutionary Dynamics.

During Epstein’s criminal case in Florida (which resulted in Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea in state court), Pinker provided a semantic interpretation of a federal statute to Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, Pinker’s friend who was part of Epstein’s legal team. Pinker later expressed regret for offering this opinion.

Photos surfaced of Pinker and Epstein at a dinner in 2014, with anti-trans physicist Lawrence Krauss reportedly seating them near each other.

After Epstein’s arrest on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019, Pinker told anti-trans biologist Jerry Coyne:

The annoying irony is that I could never stand the guy, never took research funding from him, and always tried to keep my distance. Friends and colleagues described him to me as a quantitative genius and a scientific sophisticate, and they invited me to salons and coffee klatches at which he held court. But I found him to be a kibitzer and a dilettante — he would abruptly change the subject ADD style, dismiss an observation with an adolescent wisecrack, and privilege his own intuitions over systematic data. I think the dislike was mutual—according to a friend, he “voted me off the island,” presumably because he was sick of me trying to keep the conversation on track and correcting him when he shot off his mouth on topics he knew nothing about. But Epstein had insinuated himself with so many people I intersected with (Alan Dershowitz, Martin Nowak, John Brockman, Steve Kosslyn, Lawrence Krauss) and so many institutions he helped fund (Harvard’s Program in Evolutionary Dynamics, ASU’s Origins Project, even Harvard Hillel) that I often ended up at the same place with him. (Most of these gatherings were prior to the revelation of his sex crimes, such as the 2002 plane trip to TED with Dawkins, Dennett, the Brockmans, and others, but Krauss’s Origins Project Meeting came after he served his sentence.) Since I was often the most recognizable person in the room, someone would snap a picture; some of them resurfaced this past week, circulated by people who disagree with me on various topics and apparently believe that the photos are effective arguments.

In the interests of full disclosure, there was another connection. Alan Dershowitz and I are friends and colleagues, and we taught a course together at Harvard. He often asks me questions about syntax and semantics of laws, most recently the impeachment statute. While he was representing Epstein, he asked me about the natural interpretation of one of the relevant laws, and I offered my opinion; this was cited in a court document. I did it as a favor to a friend and colleague, not as a paid expert witness, but I now regret that I did so. And needless to say I find Epstein’s behavior reprehensible.

Given my longstanding distaste for everything Epstein, it’s galling to be publicly associated with him based on some photos and mutual associates, but I suppose this is one of the dubious perquisites of fame (by academic standards).  And it’s a particular hazard in the era of social media — last year I was featured in a New York Times op-ed by Jesse Singal called “Social Media Is Making Us Dumber. Here’s Exhibit A”; this year I appear to be Exhibit B.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is an entrepreneur and anti-transgender activist.

In 2012, Epstein invited Musk to visit Little St. James Island, and asked how many people Musk would bring for a helicopter trip. Musk expressed interest, asking “What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?”

In December 2013, Musk sent multiple emails to Epstein about an upcoming trip to the British Virgin Islands / St. Barth’s area during the holidays and inquiring about the best time to visit Epstein’s island. Epstein replied with possible date ranges and offered to send transport. There is no evidence in the released files that Musk ever actually went to Epstein’s island. On January 31, 2026, Musk’s estranged trans child Vivian Wilson posted on Threads: “I can confirm we were in St Barth’s at the time specified in the emails, and therefore I believe they are authentic.”

Some 2013 communications also showed Epstein’s assistant coordinating a potential lunch at SpaceX between Musk and Epstein’s team in 2013. Despite multiple exchanges over time, the filed contain no indication of business deals, criminal involvement, or other substantive collaborations.

Following the 2026 release, Musk responded in part: “Nobody has fought harder for full release of the Epstein files and prosecutions of those who abused children more than I did […] I knew that I would be smeared relentlessly, despite never having attended his parties or been on his “Lolita Express” plane or set foot on his creepy island or done anything wrong at all.”

Stephen Hanson

On October 18, 2014, Stephen Hanson (Shanson900) shared a New York Times Magazine article on transgender students at Wellesley College with the subject line “Cover story Sunday’s.”

Peter Thiel

Peter Thiel is a investor and anti-transgender activist. Documents showed that an investment firm co-founded by the venture capitalist accepted $40 million from Epstein and that the two corresponded for at least five years before Epstein’s death. In 2018, Epstein urged Thiel to “Visit me Caribbean.” A spokesman for Thiel declined to comment on the relationship but said Thiel “never went to Epstein’s island.”
