Elaine Lockhart vs. transgender people

Elaine Lockhart is a psychiatrist and anti-transgender activist based in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2024, Lockhart co-signed an open letter by Louise Irvine of anti-trans hate group Genspect criticizing the British Medical Association (BMA), which called for a public critique of the Cass Review. Lockhart also co-authored a 2024 paper defending the Cass Review with Zhenya Abbruzzese of anti-trans hate group Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine.

Background

Lockhart earned a medical degree at University College Dublin (UCD) in 1988. Lockhart then worked in France, the United Kingdom, and Ireland before completing core psychiatry and higher training in child and adolescent psychiatry in the West of Scotland.

As a trainee, Lockhart took part in the Scottish Needs Assessment Programme for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). From 2001 Lockhart was a consultant in pediatric liaison psychiatry for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

From 2019 to 2022, Lockhart was a clinical advisor to the Scottish Government.

In 2020, Lockhart was appointed as an honorary senior lecturer in the School of Health & Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow.

In June 2026, Lockhart became a part-time consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist for the North of Scotland Tier 4 CAMHS network.

Anti-trans activism

In 2024, Lockhart was a signatory to an open letter criticizing the British Medical Association (BMA), which called for a public critique of the Cass Review. That letter’s lead signer was Louise Irvine of anti-trans hate group Genspect and Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender.

Lockhart also co-authored a 2024 article defending the Cass Review. This paper is illustrative of how Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM) and ideological allies within professional associations and journals frame their political aims as apolitical, while claiming their critics are politically motivated. See the profile of lead author C. Ronny Cheung for a detailed analysis of Lockhart’s paper.
