‘The National Post’ vs. transgender people

The National Post is a conservative Canadian newspaper that has published consistently anti-transgender content.

Background

The National Post was founded in 1998 by Conrad Black. Black hoped to create a competitor to The Globe and Mail, It is based in Toronto.

In 2019, Canadian journalist Maëlys McArdle published an extensive analysis of The National Post’s anti-trans animus, finding: “The National Post communicated its opposition to the acceptance of trans and non-binary people in 131 articles from July 2011 until December 2019. It published only nine articles supporting acceptance over the same period.”

Contributors

The National Post has platformed many prominent Canadian anti-trans activists and conservative trans Canadians. They have sometimes published counterpoint opinion pieces by trans supportive people and progressive trans Canadians, including Mercedes Allen, Alexandre Baril, and Florence Ashley.
