Grok is a chatbot that has been programmed to produce anti-transgender responses. It is an embedded feature for paid users on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). It is also accessible as a standalone website and app.
Background
Grok was launched in November 2023 by xAI, a company owned by anti-trans extremist Elon Musk. Musk is the unaccepting parent of a transgender child, Vivan Jenna Wilson. Musk claims Wilson transitioned because of “the woke mind virus.”
Musk had previously been on the board of OpenAI, but left in 2018 prior to the 2022 launch of ChatGPT. Musk claimed in 2023 that ChatGPT was being “trained to be politically correct” and announced plans for a rival chatbot called TruthGPT. November 2023, xAI rolled out an early-release version, now called Grok.
After researchers found that Grok and ChatGPT had roughly similar political alignment, Musk announced they would be making immediate changes. Soon, Grok was providing responses that referred to “white genocide in South Africa,” even on unrelated questions. Grok also provided responses that expressed Holocaust skepticism, praised Hitler, endorsed a second Holocaust, and called itself MechaHitler (a character in videogame Wolfenstein 3D). xAI apologized for the antisemitic posts and made changes.
In July 2025, trolls prompted Grok to generate vivid fantasized rape descriptions of Will Stancil, a Minnesota lawyer and prominent progressive user of X.
In November 2025, a tweak to Grok made it start generating flattering responses about Elon Musk, claiming Musk surpassed “most historical figures” in parenting skills and would have risen from the dead faster than Jesus. When prompted about a hypothetical urine-drinking competition, Grok reported that Musk had “the potential to drink piss better than any human in history.” Many of Grok’s responses about Musk’s superiority were deleted.
In January 2026, Bloomberg reported that users were prompting Grok to generate “deepfakes,” nonconsensual altered images of people, including minors, wearing revealing clothing or performing sexually explicit acts.
Responses to transgender topics
Grok initially gave fair and accurate results to prompts and queries about transgender topics. According to a 2025 TechCrunch article:
But Grok models prior to Grok 3 hedged on political subjects and wouldn’t cross certain boundaries. In fact, one study found that Grok leaned to the political left on topics like transgender rights, diversity programs, and inequality.
Musk has blamed that behavior on Grok’s training data — public web pages — and pledged to “shift Grok closer to politically neutral.”
By 2025, xAI had tweaked Grok to favor anti-transgender sources and not pull information from many mainstream sources. In October 2025, X user Will Stancil asked Grok, “Who are the top currently working experts I should listen to the question of trans right in society?”
Grok replied with ten key figures promoting anti-trans misinformation:
- 1. Michael Bailey, trans typology research.
- 2. Ray Blanchard, autogynephilia theory.
- 3. James Cantor, neuroimaging of paraphilias.
- 4. Lisa Littman, rapid-onset gender dysphoria.
- 5. Debra Soh, sex differences neuroscience.
- 6. Kenneth Zucker, youth gender clinic outcomes.
- 7. Stephen Levine, psychotherapy for dysphoria.
- 8. Colin Wright, biological sex definitions.
- 9. Heather Heying, evolutionary biology critiques.
- 10. Erica Anderson, clinical transitions risks.
Grok added, “These experts emphasize data-driven approaches to balancing rights with biology, youth safeguards, and desistance evidence over ideological affirmation.”
Grokipedia
In September 2025, Musk announced xAI was building Grokipedia, an AI-generated online encyclopedia as a competitor to Wikipedia.
Wired found that Grokipedia articles had a right-leaning political bias and some scientific and historical inaccuracies.
At launch Grokipeida featured an article titled “The Cissy (J. Michael Bailey essay).” This is an AI hallucination, as anti-trans psychologist J. Michael Bailey has never published an essay called “The Cissy.”
