Nele Jongeling and transgender people
Nele Jongeling is an illustrator and ex-transgender activist. Jongeling is co-founder of ex-trans project Post Trans.
Background
Nele Jongeling was born in 1996. Jongeling made a gender transition as an adult in 2016, taking hormones for two years before stopping in 2018. Jongeling published under the name Peer Jongeling before and for a short time after making additional gender changes. In 2019, Jongeling expressed no regret for making a gender transition.
Jongeling stated on the Post Trans website:
“When I was 20 I couldn’t identify as a woman anymore, I shaved my hair and I starved myself into being underweight to somehow get rid of the body I hated so much. I found out about the term transgender and I couldn’t stop thinking about it anymore. I decided to either kill myself or to transition into a man. […] Transitioning saved me and I won’t ever regret this decision. But it also brought me to a place of reflection on why I really transitioned. I don’t think that I was born trans anymore, instead I think that I became trans.”
In 2024, Jongeling stopped using Peer as an artist’s name: “I wasn’t ready to use my birth name in professional contexts yet. This led to some confusing situations which is why I‘m happy to announce that from now on, I‘m simply Nele.”
Ex-trans activism
Elie Vandenbussche and Jongeling founded Post Trans in 2019. Jongeling posted a series of videos on YouTube discussing making additional gender changes.
In 2021, Vandenbussche and Jongeling published an illustrated pamphlet titled “Gender Detransition: A path toward self-acceptance.” Illustrated by Jongeling, it featured testimonials from ex-trans activists and an interview with anti-trans extremist William J. Malone of hate group Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM).
In 2022, Jongeling published the graphic novel Emil:ia, which follows alter ego Emil through transition and “detransition.”
