Family Education Trust (FET) is a British charity that “researches the causes and consequences of family breakdown.”
They have been highly critical of sex education materials in public schools that discuss trans and gender diverse identities in a value-neutral way, which they consider “indoctrination.” They also oppose conversion therapy bans and have featured prominent anti-trans activists at their events.
In 2026, Family Education Trust was listed by Amnesty International UK in retracted reports on anti-rights movements in the United Kingdom.
Background
In 1969, Stanley Ellison published a letter in The Times urging “men and women who believe in the decent
way of life” to take a stand “before it’s too late.”
Is it not about time that a group or association was formed to resist the destructive and demoralizing trends in our present community? There is increasing evidence that the stability of the traditional British way of life is threatened. Venereal disease is increasing. Termination of pregnancy is increasing. Drug addiction is increasing. Hooliganism is increasing. Smoking is increasing. Gambling is increasing. All are examples of anti-social behaviour.
[…] This tide of immorality, self-deception, and insatiable appetite for all that is worthless, must be resisted by an even stronger group in the community who do not wish to see this country destroyed by a sickness as dangerous and as virulent as the plague.”
In 1971, Ellison established the Responsible Society Education and Research Trust to address the social consequences of the cultural and sexual changes of the 1960s. It was formally registered as a company and charity in 1973. Valerie Riches, who became one of the organization’s most influential figures, served first as Honorary Secretary and later as Director.
In 1985, the organization adopted the name Family and Youth Concern. In 1992, they began using the name Family Education Trust, and in July 1998, the organization was registered under that name.
Anti-trans activism
In 2025, FET held a conference critical of sex education policies in schools, led by Stephen Balogh and featuring Philip Kiszely, Laoise de Brún, John Smeaton, and Callum Webster.
