Veronica Ivy and transgender people

Veronica Ivy is a Canadian activist and transgender athlete. Ivy’s cycling win in the 2018 UCI Women’s Masters Track World Championship for the 35–44 age bracket generated intense media scrutiny.

Background

Ivy was born in 1982 and grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. Ivy earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Victoria in 2005, a master’s degree from Dalhousie University in 2006, and a doctorate from University of Waterloo in 2012. Ivy came out as trans in May 2012.

Ivy taught philosophy at the College of Charleston in South Carolina staring in 2014, earning tenure in 2019. Ivy left in 2020.

Trans activism

After the 2018 cycling win and a 2019 record, Ivy received significant backlash. Around that time Ivy changed names, from Rachel McKinnon to Veronica Ivy.

Since leaving academia in 2020, Ivy has been CEO and Chief Diversity Trainer for Sport Is A Human Right LLC. Ivy has promoted the tagline “Sport is a right” as part of that advocacy for trans athletes.
