Claire Weir is a British educator, former barrister, and anti-transgender activist. Weir served as a trustee to anti-trans group Sex Matters from 2024 to 2026.
Background
Claire Weir was born in July 1972. Weir was called to the bar in 1998 and was a Parliamentary Researcher. Weir served as a primary school governor and as a trustee for the Office pof the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education.
According to the Sex Matters website:
Claire is now a teacher; she was previously a barrister specialising in public law, human-rights law and employment and discrimination law at Blackstone Chambers, where she advised public bodies and private clients on sensible decision-making, including compliance with the Human Rights Act, Data Protection Act and employment legislation. Her clients included the Home Office, Ministry of Justice, Parole Board, Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, Law Society and General Medical Council. She has also been a trustee of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education. She is working on a PhD entitled The Law of Adoption in the Old Babylonian Period at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
Anti-trans activism
In the Sex Matters press release for the trustee appointment, Weir stated:
“I believe strongly in free speech and human rights. Trans-identifying men and women have the right to live their lives without discrimination or harassment, but these rights do not automatically trump the rights of women to single-sex spaces and fair competition, or the right to speak about biological reality. These issues are at the heart of Sex Matters’ high-quality work and advocacy, and I am delighted to be joining the organisation.”
Weir was no longer listed as a trustee in 2026.
