Caroline Eliacheff vs. transgender people

Caroline Eliacheff is a French psychologist, author, and anti-transgender activist. Eliacheff is co-founder of anti-trans group Observatoire de la petite sirène [Little Mermaid Watch], a group critical of trans healthcare for minors.

Background

Caroline Eliacheff was born on June 5, 1947 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France to film producer Anatole Eliacheff and journalist-writer and politician Françoise Giroud.

At age 14 Eliacheff left home, and on June 7, 1962, two days after turning 15, Eliacheff married actor and director Robert Hossein with special permission from French authorities. The couple had one son, Nicolas, in 1963, before divorcing in 1964. Eliacheff later formed a long-term union with film producer Marin Karmitz. They had two children, Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz.

Eliacheff pursued medical studies at the Faculté de Médecine Broussais-Hôtel-Dieu in Paris, completing a medical thesis in 1972 and subsequently earning a diploma in child psychiatry. Eliacheff became a trained psychoanalyst in 1974. Eliacheff served as a consultation physician at the Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades in Paris from 1972 to 1980, before leading the Centre Médico-Psychologique in Issy-les-Moulineaux from 1980 until 2013.

Starting in 1993, Eliacheff published several books, including À corps et à cris: être psychanalyste avec les tout petits (1993), Vies privées, de l’enfant roi à l’enfant victime (1996) and Adolescents dans la violence (2000). Over the following decades Eliacheff authored and co-authored numerous books on childhood, family and psychological development, including La Famille dans tous ses états (2004), Puis-je vous appeler Sigmund? i(2010), and Comment le voile est tombé sur la crèche (2013). In 2018 Eliacheff published a reflective work on the legacy of Françoise Dolto, and in 2021 Eliacheff released an autobiographical narrative about the Countess of Ségur.

Eliacheff co-wrote the screenplays for Claude Chabrol’s La Cérémonie (1995), Merci pour le chocolat (2000) and La Fleur du mal (2003), and collaborated on the adaptation of Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy (2010). Eliacheff also maintained a weekly radio column on France Culture for many years.

Eliacheff has engaged with social debates, including opposition to the PACS in 1999 and co-founding the Observatoire de la petite sirène in the early 2020s, focusing on issues surrounding gender identity in minors.

Anti-trans activism

Eliacheff was a featured speaker at a 2024 event held by anti-trans groups Observatoire de la petite sirène and Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine.
