‘Xtra’ magazine and transgender people
Xtra magazine is a Canadian LGBTQ publication. Their coverage of transgender topics is consistently fair and accurate.
Background
In 1971, Glad Day Bookshop owner Jearld Moldenhauer proposed launching a gay-focused publication. Moldenhauer and an informal collective launched The Body Politic on November 1, 1971. In 1975, The Body Politic‘s collective formally incorporated as the nonprofit Pink Triangle Press. The Body Politic was published until 1987.
Xtra! launched on February 19, 1984 as a four-page tabloid. In 1993, Xtra added local editions Xtra! West in Vancouver and Capital Xtra! in Ottawa.
In 1998, Xtra launched a website at xtra.ca. In 2013, the site moved to dailyxtra.com. All three publications ceased print editions when the parent organization moved to digital-only publishing in 2015.
In November 2020, the site moved to xtramagazine.com.
