‘PinkNews’ and transgender people

PinkNews is a British group blog that focuses on LGBTQ issues. Their coverage of transgender topics is consistently fair and accurate.

Background

PinkNews was founded by Benjamin Cohen in July 2005. PinkUnlimited.co.uk Ltd was registered in December 2005. PinkUnlimited launched a suite of websites, including PinkUnlimited, PinkLegal, and PinkMarket. In 2006, they launched a print publication The PinkNews, but after six months they switched to a digital-only publication.

In 2015, the company was renamed PinkNews Media Group Ltd. In November 2020, the company was renamed PinkNews Media Ltd.

Notable trans coverage

In 2010, PinkNews reported deeply on UK LGBT rights group Stonewall and their silence on supporting marriage equality and transgender rights under CEO Ben Summerskill. The organization eventually came out in support of marriage equality. Marriage equality was passed in England and Wales in 2013. After Summerskill left Stonewall in 2014, PinkNews and Stonewall developed a less adversarial relationship, and under new CEO Ruth Hunt, Stonewall began campaigning for transgender rights.

In 2020, writer and anti-trans activist Julie Bindel sued PinkNews for libel over an article on abuse within the anti-trans feminist movement. The article did not mention Bindel by name. The case was settled, and both parties released a joint statement.
