‘Breitbart’ vs. transgender people

Breitbart is a conservative American media organization. Their coverage of transgender topics is consistently negative.

Background

The website breitbart.com was founded by conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart (1969–2012). Breitbart worked with The Drudge Report and HuffPost in their early days. In 2005, Breitbart launched Breitbart.com as a site linking to wire stories and commentary Over the next few years, Breitbart expanded to a web farm, including Breitbart.tv, Big Government, Big Hollywood, and Big Journalism.

Following Andrew Breitbart’s unexpected death in March 2012, longtime colleague Larry Solov became chief executive officer and main owner of Breitbart News.

In the early 2010s, Steve Bannon emerged as a critical figure in the organization’s evolution. A founding board member and later executive chairman, Bannon shaped Breitbart’s editorial direction toward a more nationalistic and populist tone. Under Bannon’s leadership, the site became closely associated with the alt-right movement and positioned itself as a core media voice in conservative circles, especially during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.

Anti-trans coverage

Breitbart was a key outlet in covering Gamergate, a complex online harassment campaign centered on the videogame industry. In September 2014, the outlet launched a dedicated Gamergate section, framing the issue primarily as a revolt against perceived corruption and ideological bias in games journalism. Key contributors included Milo Yiannopoulos and Allum Bokhari. In February 2015, Breitbart published an exposé of Brianna Wu in which Yiannopoulos outed and deadnamed Wu and confirmed that Wu had lied about having a college degree.
