Claire Abernathy is an American ex-transgender activist. Abernathy gets money and attention by making it harder for others to receive transgender healthcare.
Abernathy is affiliated with anti-trans hate group Genspect. Abernathy is frequently quoted by anti-transgender extremists, including Daily Wire, Azeen Ghorayshi of the New York Times, and Independent Women’s Forum.
Background
Abernathy was born in ~2005. According to information Abernathy provided to the US Federal Trade Commission:
After âexperiencing a traumatic sexual assault,â she began identifying as a âboyâ when she was just eleven years old. A year later, she met with a therapist who specialized in transgender care. Claire explains that this therapist recommended she realize her male identity through hormone injections and sex-change surgeries. Although Claireâs mother was not confident in the diagnosis, she was told that affirming Claireâs identity as a âboyâ was necessary to prevent Claire from committing suicide. The takeaway for Claireâs mother was clear: the only way to heal Claire, the therapist explained, was to take the chemical and surgical steps necessary to make Claireâs body more masculine. And so it happened that, in the summer following her eighth-grade graduation, Claireâs breasts were removed.
Anti-trans activism
In July 2025, Abernathy was a panelist at the 2025 US Federal Trade Commission anti-trans workshop.
