Theo A. H. Doreleijers is a Dutch psychiatrist and professor emeritus. Doreleijers published extensively on child and adolescent psychiatry, particularly in forensic settings.
Background
Doreleijers completed a medical degree in the Netherlands, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry in Rotterdam (Dijkzigt and Sophia Children’s Hospital). In 1980, Doreleijers took an appointment at the Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague to set up a department there.
In 1995, Doreleijers founded the European Association for Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology (EFCAP-EU), which organised its first international conference in Amsterdam in 2008. As of October 2007, he was appointed professor of Forensic Psychiatry at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology at Leiden University.
In 1995, Doreleijers earned a doctorate with a dissertation titled Diagnostiek tussen jeugdstrafrecht en hulpverlening (“Diagnostics Between Juvenile Criminal Law and Care”), which laid the foundation for his future research endeavors.
Two years later, Doreleijers was appointed professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the VUmc in Amsterdam. Doreleijers also became a trainer of child psychiatrists at the Academic Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry de Bascule.
