Miriam Grossman is an American psychiatrist and anti-transgender activist. Grossman claims to be “exposing the origin and hazards of the Sexuality and Gender Industry.”
Grossman has found there is a lucrative market offering services for “gender-confused young people and their parents.” Grossman targets parents who are anxious or upset about their child’s gender identity and expression.
Grossman also gets paid to testify against trans healthcare in court cases and legislative hearings.
Grossman has also become a favored source for conservative and fascist media outlets critical of sex and gender minorities. Grossman appeared in the anti-trans propaganda piece What Is a Woman? and is author of the 2023 book Lost in Trans Nation: A Child Psychiatrist’s Guide Out of the Madness.
Background
Miriam Ruth Grossman was born in December 1952. Grossman earned a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1974 and a medical degree from New York University Medical School in 1979. After an internship in pediatrics at New York’s Beth Israel Hospital from 1979 to 1980, Grossman had appointments at North Shore University Hospital – Cornell University Medical College: an adult psychiatry residency from 1985 to 1987 and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship from 1987 to 1989. Grossman practiced in San Diego from 1989 to 1994, then in Israel for a year. Grossman practiced at the Vista Del Mar outpatient clinic from 2000 to 2001 and from 2009 to 2011.
Starting in 1995 Grossman provided UCLA Student Psychological Services. This time spent with college students turned Grossman into an activist:
For twelve years, I was on the staff of UCLA’s Student Counseling Services, where nearly all my patients were students in their late teens and twenties. Because of this demographic, and no doubt also because of what’s now called the “hook-up culture”, many students who ended up in my office had a history of genital infections, one or more abortions, possible exposure to HIV, and other troublesome consequences of sexual activity, whether “protected’ or not. Of necessity, I began to learn more about sexual health matters in teens and young adults. It was through that effort that I discovered the egregious attitudes and practices that pervaded not only the student health and counseling centers of UCLA, but, I realized with disbelief, many professional organizations and private groups that consider themselves guardians of our children’s health and well-being.
In 2012 Grossman returned to New York to practice, including a role at Mid-Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center, a secure treatment facility for people who have been involuntarily committed.
Anti-transgender activism
Grossman’s 2007 book Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student came out under the pseudonym “Anonymous, M.D.” In it, Grossman shares some anecdotes about trans students and criticizes value-neutral language and cultural competency. Grossman’s 2009 book You’re Teaching My Child What? A Physician Exposes the Lies of Sex Ed and How They Harm Your Child is more explicitly anti-trans. Chapter 7 is titled “Genderland” and criticizes a number of key concepts about gender identity and expression.
In 2011 Grossman testified against California SB 48, which prohibited teaching materials that reflect adversely on marginalized groups. It also required that schools teach about the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other cultural groups, to the development of California and the United States.
