Kirralie Smith vs. transgender people

Kirralie Smith is an Australian anti-transgender extremist. Smith is spokesperson for anti-trans group Binary and is author of the 2024 book Devastated: How Gender Ideology Is Tearing Australian Families Apart. In 2025, Smith lost a defamation case brought by two transgender soccer players.

Background

Kirralie Smith was born on September 18, 1971. Smith is a homemaker and homeschooler. Smith and spouse Greg own Manning Valley Electrical Services, based in Taree. They have three children and fostered two additional children.

Smith is a Christian and is deeply involved in Australia’s anti-Islam movement through Q Society and Halal Choices. In 2020, Smith and Q Society were successfully sued for defamation by Mohamed El-Mouelhy, the director of Australia’s Halal Certification Authority. Smith and Q Society settled out of court and were required to make a public apology for videos posted in 2015.

Anti-trans activism

Smith was involved in Marriage Alliance, an anti-LGBTQ organization founded in 2015 to oppose marriage equality.

In November 2018 the group rebranded as Binary and refocused on attacking transgender rights. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) classifies Binary Australia as an “anti-LGBTQ+” group.

In 2024, Smith published the anti-trans book Devastated: How Gender Ideology Is Tearing Australian Families Apart. The book features anecdotes from nine Australian families who claim “gender ideology” harmed their families. Most of the families are unaccepting parents of a trans or gender diverse child.

Smith was sued by two transgender recreational league soccer players: former YouTuber Riley Dennis of The Flying Bats FC and Stephanie Blanch of Wingham FC. Smith was enraged that they were playing on trans-inclusive teams. Smith repeatedly referred to Dennis and Blanch as “male,” “men,” or “bloke.” Smith called Blanch a “bloke in a frock” and claimed Dennis was “a man appropriating womanhood” who had injured two cisgender players.

A 2025 ruling found that Smith’s posts about Dennis on social media were “capable of inciting serious contempt” and “severely ridiculing,” constituting “unlawful vilification.” It found Smith’s comments about Blanch constituted a “sustained campaign of belittling, harassment and intimidation.” The judge said the term “bloke in a frock” is “a personal, derogatory, humiliating and degrading statement.” Smith was ordered to pay almost $100,000 and make a public apology.
