Helen Spiegel Lee vs. transgender people

Helen Spiegel Lee is an American veterinarian and anti-transgender activist.

Background

Helen Spiegel Lee was born in March of 1964 and earned a veterinary degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. Lee has practiced veterinary medicine at several facilities in Massachusetts. Lee has also been known as Helen Spiegel-Savoie.

Lee identifies as lesbian and was in a relationship with Keely Savoie (born 1972) that ended in 2014. A child from that relationship was 3 at the time and placed under joint custody. When the child began expressing interest in being called Rosa and addressed with feminine pronouns, Lee’s ex-partner was supportive, but Lee was not, saying:

“For four long years, my son lived as a boy with me and as a girl everywhere else. The situation was traumatic for both of us. I was constantly worried about the effects on my son of being torn in two. At one point, I even tried to use the girl’s name, but I couldn’t do it. I just could not participate in the charade.”

Lee eventually sued for full custody, bringing in gatekeeping psychologist Amy Tishelman to testify. Lee’s ex-partner brought in pediatric endocrinologist Michelle Forcier to testify.

On February 10, 2020, Helen Spiegel-Savoie aka Helen Spiegel Lee filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Anti-trans activism

Lee signed the Beyond WPATH petition critical of WPATH.

In July 2025, Lee was a panelist at the 2025 US Federal Trade Commission anti-trans workshop.
